The Reality Check
You can feel it happening. Entire industries are shifting beneath our feet. AI is rewriting the rules for how we operate in the world.
Layoffs are accelerating and notices are hitting inboxes every Friday night. Burnout and toxic cultures are everywhere. Job seekers are reporting the need to send out 100+ applications a week, sometimes over 1,500 or more, just to land a single offer, thanks in large part to AI promising to make it easier to get a job, when it’s having the opposite impact.
For many senior leaders, it’s now taking six months or more to find their next role (a massive jump from prior years). College grads, minus a lucky and very smart minority, some of which are getting recruited out of high school aren’t landing the internships and jobs they were promised, yet they’re saddled with debt and living with their parents.
Meanwhile, too many capable people are stuck in roles where they don’t believe in the product, feel disconnected from their company culture, or are forced to watch their companies and products fade into irrelevance under the speed and weight of technological disruption. And it’s not going to slow down. And we all know it.
Nearly 2 million people in the US have been without a job for 27 weeks or more.
Meanwhile, demand for frontline, blue-collar, and specialized workers is growing, while professional and knowledge-worker roles continue to contract.
One of my colleagues told me recently that a single IT manager job posting received more than 1,600 applications within days.
Think about that. You would have had better odds applying to be a NASA astronaut this year, where the acceptance rate was roughly 800 to 1.
And the truth is, the odds are even worse. When companies get overwhelmed by applicant volume, they stop reading resumes. They either hire someone they already know or engage a recruiter to relaunch the search entirely. The whole pool gets ignored.
No resume tweak, keyword optimization, or “perfect” cover letter can overcome a scenario that was a losing bet from the start.
And with AI-assisted application tools blasting out applications at scale, companies are drowning in noise. It’s mathematically impossible for them to evaluate everyone. Online applications have always been a long shot, but now they’re nearly a dead end.
This is why job seekers have to change their approach. The old tactics no longer work. The only reliable path forward is a new one.
Countless other capable people have wasted years, and tens of thousands of dollars chasing different types of side-hustles or “work-from-home-in-your-underwear” type money making schemes that never worked out for one reason or another.
And yet, underneath it all, is a deeper fracture.
Work itself has decoupled from reward.
For centuries, we lived under a story: Work hard = get rewarded. But that myth has collapsed.
AI is the great accelerator of the decoupling.
With access to what is looking more and more like infinite intelligence, and anyone’s ability to literally ‘speak’ new products and solutions into existence, entrepreneurship has suddenly become commoditized, the barrier to entry no longer exists, and “hard work” no longer guarantees status, security, or wealth.
That’s why so many people feel so unmoored right now. The gravity that once held things together for ALL of us, is literally gone.
Clearly, it’s not your fault. It’s just that now the system (i.e. The Career Ladder) really is broken. And not for just one reason.
Here’s another important thing to consider.
For too long, we’ve been told that success comes from just one kind of capital = INTELLIGENCE.
Up until just a few years ago, the story went like this…
Simply pile up knowledge, skills, and experience, and you’ll be good to go.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth you and I both already know.
AI is now the most advanced form of intelligence on the planet. And the gap between machine intelligence and any single human’s is only going to widen at a pace NO ONE can wrap their head around. Not even those who are building this technology.

Knowing that the only careers likely to remain durable over the next decade are the ones that are dull, dirty, dangerous, or difficult (the ones tied to real legal liability, elite performers, people caring for the very young or very old, or work that is still too complex for a robot), you owe it to yourself and your family to move fast, master the tools we have today, and as the saying goes, make hay while the sun shines.
My read on where this is heading, based on being deeply embedded with the people building these technologies and the investors backing what they believe will be the most transformative companies of our era, is simple.
The smartest among us will accelerate. Hard. Everyone else, especially those outside the top 1%, risks becoming less and less valuable to the new system over time.
The rich will get richer at a pace we have never seen. The poor and the middle class will collapse into a single category.
Will that eventually mean UBI (Universal Basic Income) or will Elon Musk’s prediction of UHI (Universal High Income) be the outcome?
Nobody knows.
I’ll admit, I could be wrong. But I’m giving you a clean reflection of what I’m hearing from the sharpest technical and financial minds behind closed doors, and this is the consensus they’re betting on.
To survive the transition we’re all living through, and can feel in our gut is happening, I believe the best solution is to anchor yourself in a community of ambitious peers (i.e. Pathfinders) who share similar values, and are all working to develop the 1 truly relevant skill that compounds more than any other, when everything else around us shifts…
RESILIENCE.
Because resilience isn’t just about being thick skinned or smart. It’s about seeking balance across 4 kinds of capital (not just 1):
Material capital: The scarce resources that actually matter in our lives.
Intelligence capital: The knowledge, skills, and our lived experience.
Diversity capital: The courage, self-confidence, flexibility, and resilience to adapt when things shift.

When any one of the above are weak, breakdown follows.
